As of last week, I have added hiking the entire Appalachian Trail to my bucket list.
My step cousin in Texas is doing it, and she has inspired me to do it as well. She looks like she is having the time of her life, and I know she will always look back on that, probably, as the hardest thing she ever did (and accomplished!)
As of right now I am aiming to begin in April of 2014. I think I can have enough money saved up by then for everything. I have started looking up and buying equipment for the hike. I ordered some pants and a jacket today from Columbia, and I plan to test them out on a couple hiking trips to see if they will work for 6 months on the AT.
I have been researching it like crazy, mostly trying to see if I can actually finish it. But I’ve seen that people with all kinds of disabilities have completed it, and that makes me sure I can do it too. My next step is to get books by people who have hiked the whole thing. I’m making a list and am planning on getting them sometime soon.
Next summer I am planning to go on an Outward Bound rafting trip. It lasts 7-10 days and they sleep outside at night and raft during the day. I need to take a few hardcore outing trips to prepare for the AT, and I’ve never gotten to white water raft before, and it sounds like a ton of fun. I’m really excited about it!
Anyway, I’ll send more updates as they come.
